Despite the current health emergency, for the 17th consecutive year October marks the opening of BergamoScienza – one of the most awaited Science Festival in Italy. Organized by the BergamoScienza Association, the Festival will, for the first time ever, be an all-digital event happening from Saturday 3rd to Sunday 18th October 2020.
This year, as in the past, BergamoScienza features events and activities exploring science and technology in relation to multiple fields: from biology to physics, from medicine to astronomy, from nanotechnologies to space. The Festival’s main objective, which has so far involved 26 Nobel Prize winners, is to make science accessible to all, particularly students and schools, to spark curiosity about the world that surrounds us and expand our interests. The opening event of BergamoScienza features 5 Nobel winners who will, from the Teatro Sociale of Bergamo, discuss and talk about their vision of the future. The Nobel Laureates include 4 Nobel Prize winners in Medicine - Elizabeth Blackburn and Jack Szostak (2009), Craig Mello (2006) and Barry Marshall (2005) and one Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry - Martin Chalfie (2008). They will focus on how to place science at the heart of our future and on how Science should be understood not only as the acquisition of new knowledge but also - and perhaps above all- as a critical thinking aptitude and as a way to learn and make informed choices. Among the speakers are Luca Parmitano who will talk about bacteria in space or Piero Angela who will explain together with Massimo Polidoro, writer and science disseminator, how to discredit irrational beliefs and draw the line between pseudo-science and science.
